Democrats One Step Closer to Mob Rule: Maine Joins Blue States To Abolishing Electoral College

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

“If it was not for the brilliant concept of the Electoral College, every Presidential election would be decided by only three for four urban areas.” (commenter)

‘Unlimited majority rule is an instance of the principle of tyranny.’

‘Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority.’ (Ayn Rand)

The Electoral College was designed specifically to prevent the tyranny of big states over small states, as was the U.S. Senate, which affords all states, large and small, equal representation.

“If we did away with the Electoral College in favor of the national popular vote, the election would still be decided in a handful of states — populous states such as California and New York. Even though both of those states are deep blue, the GOP candidate would still fish in their waters, because swinging 1 or 2 percent into the red column would be worth more than swinging 1 to 2 percent in a smaller state. Voters in small states, such as Connecticut, would be permanently and completely disenfranchised.

Moreover, candidates would campaign in big media markets (which, of course, are in big states) in order to reach as many potential voters as efficiently as possible. This would favor media personalities and celluloid campaigns. Candidates would never have to meet voters one-on-one, as they do currently in small swing states.” (The Hill)

One commenter explains:

Choosing the President by NPV (National Popular Vote) would be unconstitutional per Article II of the Constitution, for at least the following reasons.

  1. “Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof” their electors. The “Legislature thereof” would be the current legislature during the year of the Presidential election, not the legislature that voted NPV into law, would it not ?nn
  2. No elector can be a “Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States”. Why would the Constitution be so particular about that requirement if how an elector voted were to be determined according to a nationwide popular vote. In that case, what would be the point of having any electors at all ?nn
  3. The Constitution says nothing about a popular vote concerning who would become President and Vice President. In fact, there doesn’t even have to be a popular vote. And if there were, what would be the point of electoral votes being transmitted sealed to “the Seat of the Government of the United States” to be counted there if all that were necessary to elect a president would be to count a popular vote ?

It seems obvious to me that our founders did not want the President and Vice President to be determined by a nationwide popular vote. They also intended each state’s senators to be “chosen by the Legislature thereof” rather than by popular vote. That was later changed, but not by any pact among the states; an amendment to the Constitution (the 17th) was required.

Maine joins ‘popular vote’ interstate compact, bringing the total to 209—they only need to reach 270

By Olivia Murray, The American Thinker, April 18, 2024:

Pay attention people, because the canary in the coal mine isn’t breathing.

Here’s the story, via an Associated Press report published yesterday:

Maine will become the latest to join a multistate effort to elect the president by popular vote with the Democratic governor’s announcement Monday that she’s letting the proposal become law without her signature.

Under the proposed compact, each state would allocate all its electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote for president, regardless of how individual states voted in an election.

Now, if you’re unaware as to what this compact is, allow me to explain: it’s a nationwide movement to undermine the integrity of, and sidestep the political protections implemented by… the Electoral College.

While these anti-EC activists have loudly called for the abolition of the institution at the federal level, they’ve been quietly and methodically laying the framework at the state level—the National Popular Vote interstate compact. These anti-American operatives are playing the long-game, and we’re barreling toward a shocking and devastating checkmate. (The first state to sign on to the scheme was Maryland in 2007.)

Maine’s governor is Democrat Janet Mills, who said this about her decision to allow the NPV bill to become law:

Without a ranked voting system, Mills said she believes ‘the person who wins the most votes should become the president. To do otherwise seemingly runs counter to the democratic foundations of our country.’

Uh lady, that’s called tyranny of the majority, which is exactly what our Founders didn’t want, and warned against—but she’s a Democrat, so why would she care?

Many times though, this movement even gets its foot in the door thanks to Republicans. Of course, when caught red-handed, they claim ignorance—but at some point, the I’m-just-a-pitiful-idiot-politician-mea-culpa card gets played one too many times, and I start to suspect something a little more nefarious is going on.
