AI Shakes Up the Job Market But it’s Not All Bad News

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In 2023, the job landscape saw a shift thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). According to a recent study by ResumeBuilder, more than one-third of business leaders, about 37%, report that AI has replaced jobs last year. But that’s not all. Employees are also feeling the change, with 29% noting that a good chunk of their work could be handled by AI, as found by project management firm Asana. But while machines are stepping in for tasks like research and data analysis, there’s still a crucial role for humans. Someone has to be there to kick off the AI processes, understand what the AI is spitting out, and make the necessary decisions based on that info. So the good news is, even as AI grows, it doesn’t mean people are out of the picture – on the contrary – they’re indispensable.

Where the AI Impact Could be Felt Hardest

Different states are feeling the impact of AI in different ways, depending on what industries are big there. Vermont, for instance, could feel the pressure, topping the charts with the highest AI risk score. This might be due to its large number of tech and professional roles which are easy targets for AI takeover.

Virginia and Massachusetts are also on high alert, likely because they’re packed with high-tech sectors, professional services, and academic institutions—all areas that are prime for AI disruption.

States Less Affected by AI Disruption

On the other side of things, not all states are feeling the heat from AI quite as much. Take Hawaii, for instance. It’s chilling at the bottom of the risk chart with the lowest score. That’s because its economy is really built around tourism and services—areas that AI hasn’t “messed” with too much just yet. But even though Hawaii’s not feeling the pressure now, who knows? As AI keeps getting smarter, it could start playing a bigger role in these sectors too.

Then there’s Indiana, also hanging out near the bottom of that risk list. Indiana’s big on manufacturing and farming—niches that are still pretty hands-on. AI technology hasn’t made a huge splash in these areas, at least not yet. The same goes for North Dakota, New Jersey, and Nevada. These states have a mix of farming, energy, and service industries like tourism and casinos. It just shows that how much AI shakes things up job-wise really depends on what kinds of work are big in your state.

So, while some places are already dealing with how AI is changing jobs, others aren’t seeing much change yet. But with the way technology moves, who’s to say what the future holds? It’s a big reminder for everyone, no matter where you live, to keep an eye on how AI could switch things up in your own backyard.

What it Means Going Forward

This unfolding scenario shows that AI’s influence on jobs really depends on what’s going on economically in each state. Where tech and data are kings, AI poses a bigger threat to traditional jobs. But in states where hands-on industries like agriculture and tourism prevail, there’s less immediate risk—though future advancements could change that.

It’s a wake-up call for industries and workers to evolve with the tech. By understanding where AI impacts the most and preparing accordingly, both workers and companies can stay ahead in a world where AI is increasingly becoming a part of our daily professional lives. While AI is definitely reshaping how work gets done, it’s not the end of the line for human involvement—in fact, it’s more about adapting and finding new ways to collaborate with technology.
