Man Adopts Senior Dog He Finds at Work and it Changes His Life (Photos)

(N.Morgan) Little miracles happen all around us everyday and sometimes, those miracles come in with fur and an unconditional, special love that changes everything.

For Cody Leightenheimer and his family, it was a difficult time, he and his wife had lost two children due to miscarriage, and he felt he had a hole in his heart that was a bottomless pit he would never be able to fill again.

One day while Cody was working his job at a wood flooring factory, he was approached by a scrawny, big-eyed puppy.

This unexpected encounter would lead both Cody and the dog on an incredible journey which neither of them would ever forget.

Tissues will be required for this story. Here is Cory’s account of this chance meeting.

“I instantly wanted to abandon my work post and grab the thing for cuddles, but I had work to get done. This pup wasn’t having none of that though. He walked up to me and stared at me with his huge eyes.”

“I went to pet him and noticed instantly that he was flea-covered, matted, and not in the best physical shape,” Cody said. “As I looked closer, I realized that he had a lot of gray around his muzzle, ears, and face.”

“He wasn’t a pup at all. I got him chicken-ish fast food during my lunch because he was so thin I could feel his bones.” That’s when Cody had an idea. “I started sending these pictures to my wife planning on pleading to bring him home.”

Would his wife, Kasie, be willing to take in and love this precious pup?

“I didn’t have to because she beat me to the punch,” said Cody. “I thought I would have to herd him away from doors all day until I could clock out and take him home. The little guy fell asleep on the floor and stayed there all day.”

When it was time to clock out, Cody was finally able to bring the poor pooch home.

He washed off dozens of fleas from the pup’s coat and then took him to the vet, who ticked off an enormous list of existing health conditions, including stunted growth from malnutrition.

The dog also suffered from cataracts and one dilated pupil from blunt force trauma to the head which he had suffered along the way. He had ulcers in his stomach, which caused vomiting, four oronasal fistulas in his mouth caused by his teeth rotting out of his head; and, to make matters worse, he was completely deaf.

Cody and Kasie decided to name him Rooster Cogburn, after John Wayne’s character in True Grit.

“We found it fitting due to his ability to keep moving despite it all,” Cody explained.

The veterinarian said that Rooster was a Shetland sheepdog, between eight and 12 years old and he weighed only 7.3 pounds.

True to his namesake, Rooster remained strong and unwavering throughout his recovery.

All of the medical treatments and diet finally paid off!

Here he is, “after a surgery on the fistulas, a strict medicinal regimen, months of spoiling, and a family who loved him as much as their two children and then some,” said Cody.

Rooster even got a name upgrade!

Cody continued: “Toothless (nickname added by our five-year-old daughter because of her love for ‘How To Train Your Dragon’) Rooster Cogburn was a dashing elderly gentleman in the vein of Sir Ian McKellen and Christopher Plummer.

Just look at that swagger! Rooster could wear a dainty bow and still look cool.

Cody and Kasie treated their special pup like royalty. Toothless, in turn, showered them with unconditional love and affection.

”He loved being spoon-fed by his mommy, [and] Greek yogurt was his favorite treat,” said Cody.

Toothless Rooster Cogburn loved playing dress-up and looked very dashing in whatever outfits he wore.

Rooster’s life may have been painful for so long, but it was worth the trip to be able to end up with Cody and his family.

Rooster was certainly right at home with them!

It was the perfect match.

Though he was a senior dog and he had his fair share of health issues, Toothless Rooster Cogburn had a spirit which would not be denied.

He was the life of the party and the greatest best friend Cody could have asked for.

Toothless Rooster Cogburn loved naps just like any good dog does.

It was a great relief for Cody and his family to know that this old pup was finally living in a place where he could snooze peacefully all day long, safe and loved.

However, Rooster’s story has a sad ending..

“Toothless Rooster Cogburn was given three months to one year to live,” said Cody.

“He made it to one year before he got too sick to grace us with his awesomeness for one more day.”

Tearfully on June 2, 2014, Cody and his family had to say goodbye to their best friend and loving companion.

“I watched the greatest friend, most loving pet, and the most heroic fighter I’ve ever met sink into a well-deserved final nap while his mother and I held his paws,” said Cody. “I never thought I could love a pet as much as I loved him; as much as we loved him. Everyone who met him instantly loved him.”

“His vets, our friends, a theater full of patrons when he performed a walk-on role in a play. He truly was one of a kind. We hope that we gave him enough good memories to wipe out any bad ones that came before.”

This story is a wonderful example that it is never too late to help a dog and give them the happy and loving life they deserve.

Whether it’s a puppy or a senior, they all deserve to know what it’s like to be loved and cared for!

Dogs emulate the unconditional love of their Creator and most thoughtful and loving Designer. God the Father and Jesus Christ, on the day He communicated thought in the making and designing of Dogs and all the cute, loving and loyal varieties, giving to mankind the most wonderful bridge to the animal kingdom. Billions of dog lovers throughout history agree, especially those who have loved and lost a very special friend, knowing how good and gracious and giving God is, patiently await the NEW and eternal dog whom dog lovers which are born again Christians and know His wonderful written word understand

“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.: Romans 8:21 (Romans chapter 8 is some of the most deep, comforting and meaningful messages written in the word of God)

And I used to believe that since animals don’t have a spirit, they won’t be in the kingdom of God but this verse should give us hope that God, having allowed, and even delivered a precious animal into our lives to steward and care for, knows the emptiness and loss we feel and I believe He will take extra care of that when we depart. There’s another reason to hope and place your trust in the Blood of Jesus Christ and believe by faith His most precious atonement for the sins of those who love Him!

dogs weren’t created but born – please keep your religious claptrap to yourself

as someone said above, dogs make the best people, til they turn on you and eat you alive, or maul your child to death out of jealousy

        • Boo

Andy … you do know Darwin’s Evolution Theory … is still just a “Theory”? No modern science like bio genetics as an example would go so far as to say it’s anything but a theory to this day. Could you at least think about cutting chefjim some slack?

          • chefjim

Thanks for the plug, Boo. Sounds like you know a thing or two about LOGIC. Darwin said his theory would “bear him out” meaning the fossil record would reveal the missing transitional skeletons in time but they never did but they did reveal a lot of hoaxes. Piltdown man, Haeckel’s “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny”, the evolution of the horse drawings hung in museums around the world yet proven WRONG many times. LUCY – THE missing link touted as proof that man came from lower life forms yet skeleton is much more apelike and moreover, “it” was found scattered over 2 kilometers distance! Not to mention irreducible complexity or the laws of thermodynamics one and two. and the ever increasing knowledge that science reveals showing the complexity and mysteries of the single CELL. They can crack the human genome but they can’t explain mitosis. No, a fool will be a fool and an ever increasing one at that, until he realizes that foolishness is the fruit for denying the existence of God.

Modern geneticists and biologists actually mock Darwinism behind closed doors. It is widely agreed that Darwinism was only feasible at the time it was posited (in the late 1800s) because scientists knew so little at the time. If the theory were floated today, it would never even get off the ground. It would be laughed to scorn.

ALL honest geneticists and biologists admit creation.

Andy is the one stuck in the stone age — despite all ‘his’ bombast to the contrary.

            • Anonymous

Following ELB’s words.. yes, totally agree. I’ve remarked on Darwinism before although “refutation” is more to the point.

              From Darwin himself:

“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could
not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive slight modifications,
my theory would absolutely break down.” – Charles Darwin

WELL NOW.. shame he didn’t live to observe the advancements made in the cellular and molecular levels.. where his theory train gets completely derailed.

It is Proven that all life is information based. All information comes from Intelligence.

“information” is absolutely necessary for the construct of any life form – as in, DNA.
Natural Selection CANNOT account for the origin of information, genetic material..

I will end this here with the added note: this is irrefutable.

            • GUNNY

Alas — worthy opponents would at this point concede the argument. But enemies of the Word of God are not worthy opponents.

            • Mayhem

Intellectually dishonest is what they are.

If the roles were reversed i’d rather keep my mouth shut and only be thought a fool.

              But each to their own.

Thats OK.. I meant I was only providing a brief summation, but if necessary, i can detail it.
Also, I still have a monkey named Mock.

      Hello Angle#3,

Charlie here. Thank GAWD it was not a Pit Bull. Shortly after you wrote your last column mentioning Pit Bulls a lady and I think a child were either killed or mauled by one.

But why are you not concerned about the two-legged ones? Many children need to be adopted or removed from custody of drug addicted or violent parents, plus you can take them just about anywhere and not leave them in a hot car, ya know?

I know dogs don’t need that much care and don’t take up much time compared to the two-legged ones to satisfy some kind of cheap relationship. A few pats on the head, a couple of dry doughnuts and you’re off to the leashes.

      Signed,

Charlie (have you tried dried doughnuts? They are delicious!)

    • Raygun

Ever notice that so often, the people who hate God hate dogs also?

      • GUNNY

It’s okay. You can call Andy out by name. He’s all bark and no bite.

I’m tearing up now, great story!
